The Medici Chapels instead celebrate Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici (Ferdinando I de’ Medici. Maiestate tantum, May 2 – November 2, curated by Monica Bietti and Annamaria Giusti) in the fourth centennial of his death (1609). After being a cardinal in Rome, Ferdinando ensured continuity to the throne of Tuscany marrying Christina of Lorraine (1589) with a sumptuous wedding that the exhibition evokes. Among his many public initiatives, where he expressed his gifts as a great organiser, he valorised the Princes’ Chapel, a magnificent undertaking which – paradoxically – still today remain unfinished. And who knows, this exhibition just may make suggestions on how to proceed with his ambitious project ...
